Biggest problem with essays is poor structure.

Tri-partite structure:
Introduction
Body
Conclusion

Introduction:
The single most important thing is the thesis statement, usually the last sentence.
Analytical vs expository vs argumentative thesis.
Topic.
Context, roadmap, questions.

Body paragraphs:
First sentence introduces topic.
APA citations.
